happy easter weekend
the easter celebrating started friday night. armed with a helmet and my fresh united we stand i heart the war buzzcut, biked my way to chinatown for lisa, an officemate's birthday party at double happiness. the signless dark cozy basement lounge felt like some secret haven in the middle of c-town. quite interesting place. also interesting was the mix of people. few other colleagues were there with their better halves. lisa's slew of step siblings, the chinese mafia, an albanian, russian, mexican, pakistani, etc... quite the melting pot—fine-looking models included. most everyone was on the dancefloor before the night was over bouncing to mostly 80s hits. the bombay sapphire and tonic plus the hefferweizen (german bier) made for a nice bike ride back home. was zooming down the williamsburg bridge like there was no tomorrow.
and of course, there was a tomorrow. and an early one at that coz for some reason regardless of the day, i couldnt seem to sleep past 8:37 in the AM. biked my way to the nearby neighborhood's luncheonette. grandma B wasnt there yet. it was just grampa lou running the resto. had a nice homemade bacon, eggs, potatoes & toast breakfast. the place was oozing with character plus the fare was relatively cheap too. chilled a bit at home after the breakfast. by lunchtime was on the road again, heading to the city to meet cathy with her folks & some friends at the shake shack, voted as having the city's best burgers by the L magazine. the weather was perfect for being outdoors, made waiting almost an hour for our orders not that torturous. the mushroom burger i got was good. fresh p-bello shroom filled with mozzarella cheese goodness. was interesting talking to cathy's parents, especially that they once lived here in NY some ages ago and that they too are based in manila (san juan) quite near to where i live there.
by the time i was done enjoying my burger and dealing with the pigeon poop accidents, it was time to head north to the scandinavian house to meet with danish friend sarah, who'd invited me to see unge andersen, a film about the young hans christian (yup, he's danish, and so is viggo mortensen). it was quite an interesting movie. bit weird but appropriately so. it had that dark poetic whimsical feel to it which i thought was effective in letting people in on the world of the famous fairytale writer. i sense some international film wins coming. or not. any rate, it was a good break from the very pleasant day outside. nothing like a heavy strange movie feeling to balance out all the outdoor sun and smiles.
spent the saturday night at home quite responsibly as i prepared myself a nice turkey, avocado, tomato and fresh mozzarella wrap and eventually toiled away with my taxes. saved the finishing touches to the tax forms which i quite comfortably did sunday noon at a park by the hudson river. well, if i was going to do something painfully capitalistic, might as well balance it with something pleasurable, right. once the taxes were done, headed to the office dodging tons of security cameras to make copies, since it was the nearest cheapest copy station anyway. then headed to the 24/7 post office near macy's. and then headed down to the village to enjoy the perfect weather and meet with julia and ivy at the figaro cafe where i enjoyed a nice weather-appropriate pint of stella. but before biking my way to the cafe, i was attacked twice by the notorious Fi-dalla bug at a street fair. one for the 5 dollar thai food box full of thai food yumyum goodness and the other for a spanking new 5-dollar pair of top gun meets matrix except dubbed in chinese sunglasses. nice.
after enjoying some post-cafe ben&jerry's ice cream with julia and ivy, biked back home where i enjoyed a nice easter cigar in the balcony while watching the neighbors enjoy their newly installed outdoor jacuzzi. once i got sick of that, hopped on the bike again to head to cooper park to watch some mexican league footie. and to practice a bit on my footie dribbling as well. headed back home soon after. prepared myself a nice dinner. and enjoyed some reality tv junk goodness to cap off the wonderful easter weekend and celebrate the fact that id be getting a nice tax refund from uncle sam to pay off the annoying upcoming dental procedure my insurance wont cover.

in case the uber-religious among you are wondering, yes i did fulfill my easter holy day obligations. i did go to early sunday morning mass. but must admit it did bore me a bit going through the semi-automatic rituals. saving graces though were the thought of seeing all those polish and italian families, seeing the corner 99cents store lady with her kids and seeing the humanity behind her oftentimes snobby personality, and the impromptu second sermon of the priest about a terriblly stoned monkey smoking weed up the tree and why we shouldnt do drugs. nice. nothing like some wholesome family values for the kiddies set in a very age-appropriate story.
