booze cruise
oh the unnecessary joys of corporate america. 2 shuttle buses were reserved for a surprise agency party—most everyone expecting to be brought to the nearby chelsea piers for a booze cruise. we were wrong. sort of. we got the cruise part right but instead we were brought to the other side of the world, er manhattan. a well-stocked ship awaited us on the east river. once everyone was aboard, we were off to an afternoon ride around the city.
great weather to be out in the sea. food all around. nice open bar. complete with a fine selection of cigars for those feeling extra-celebratory (or adventurous). lively conversations. most everyone in a light friendly mood, alcohol and nicotine partly to blame. no work all afternoon. only thing on the agenda is to temporarily live the life—drink the livers out, smoke the lungs out, and dance the brains out.
it was a well-spent wednesday. nice little way of rewarding everyone for their hard work. (actually, it was probably the company's way of making up for the fact that there wasnt any bonus this year but anyway...) it was a wickedly enjoyable experience. a reminder of the type of easygoing work culture that has kept me from actively pursuing and exploring the proverbial greener pastures out there.

day after the cruise, i got my annual review from barb, my direct supervisor. got mostly excellent and outstanding marks. no fandamtabulous grade though coz it wasnt part of the scale. with the review, got a decent amount of merit-based raise. nice. and as icing to the cupcake, the promise of a promotion to art supervisor by january. salary and title talk aside though, it was great knowing how teammates had considered me an important part of the group who brings good ideas and a positive outlook to the table. sounds good to me. i'll give myself 2-3 pats on the back for that.
