won it

as set up by my previous post, i attended this (mostly interactive) advertising creatives' event and part of the registration for it was a contest on who could give the most creative answer to "Where is my heart?" i keyed in my answer online. was notified by the event organizer that i was one of the finalists. attended the event. and i won. yep, i won!

nothing brilliant in my answer really. just said "My heart is lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat." it's unoriginal even and quite dummy if you know what i mean but i guess it was funny enough to win myself the grand prize—a tivo.

a tivo!? what the pfft am i gonna need a tivo for? i dont even know what it actually does. ok, i do know what it does. sort of. but dont really need it. but i guess since its free (hopefully lifetime subcription included), id find use for it.

but to be honest, the fact that i could validate my "creativity" (whatever that catch phrase means) and that i could hold my own in the creative world is prize enough. not that i need the validation of course. oh before i forget, did i tell you how much they howled and were pleasantly surprised when they saw my unexpected answer projected? (hahaha, such a funny kid. now if only he had a more conventional sense of humour).

anyway, enough! it was a pretty good gathering. good food, good drinks. good goodie bag (with free book) and best of all great speakers (though the sound system really sucked). discovered a new advertising/creative idol for the day in one of them. doug jaeger, awards left and right, creative director at TBWA by 25. and now running his own company which is run based on the premise that the world's currency should be happiness and not money, happycorp.

doug had a good 6-themed sharing, with matching slideshow all throughout his presentation.
1. think inside the box—no point in reinventing the wheel. read the manual. work within the standards.
2. refuse to specialize—quite a contradiction to number 1. but resist the temptation to be really really good at one single thing. immerse in everything. dabble. dabble. dabble.
3. everything is new—always the sense of wonder in dealing with things and events.
4. there are no ordinary moments—there's inspiration in everything. there's always something happening. each moment unique.
5. the first mistake is calling it work—if it's work it's boring. call it fun. or something else. but dont call it work.
6. clients don't listen—well, they really don't.

anyway, that's it for now. either the crabcakes or the gintonic on an empty stomach's making me sleepy. besides, i got to be at the fun factory by 9:30 tomorrow.

(for those who live in civilization and know of tivo, if you could enlighten me on the wonders of it, i'll be grateful. not eternally though. maybe for a week.)

that's the stupidest cop out comment ever, jason pacheco. you should know better than reply with such flimsy either you get it crap... well, mike, "lorem ipsum" in the advertising/publishing world is used usually to fill in for copy or "text" that is to come, meaning, final text that is yet to be written. "lorem ipsum" is usually called dummy text or sometimes greek... hence, the joke/creativity comes in using a commonly used piece of placeholder text in an unusual way—in this case the answer to the question, where is your heart?

now, if you'd really want to delve deeper into what lorem ipsum means check out this good site:

will try to enjoy the new toy as much when it arrives.

good presentation last night. must admit i enjoyed yours the most, the slide (and refreshing thought behind it) helped well (not much of a fan of powerpoint slides obviously). the structured free flowingness of it helped as well..

if you've got some scattered projects here and there, would love to help out, especially if youve got those worthwhile noncorporate shit stuff.

check my site: http://home.nyu.edu/~jrp253 (not as updated as id want to but at least it's up)
