happy get over it day

march 9th is national get over it day. so ok, i gotta admit, especially with st paddy's already over last saturday and spring officially comes in 15 minutes, this blog entry's just about 10 centuries too late. sucks obviously. but in that case, consider this an advanced greeting and an early reminder to mark your calendars for next year. in short, get over it.

i dont know why this holiday hasnt got as much attention as valentine's or halloween yet. i mean, im sure that as much as it's human to love and all that cotton candy stuff, it's just as human to be getting over this and that. and if we could spend a whole day threatening strangers and their aunts with tricks if they don't give us treats, surely we'd be getting more candies if we scared people by the threat of getting over them.

so ok, ok. so getting over isnt the easiest thing in the world. take for example this bloody stranger i encountered one bright sunny morning in this lovely city. i was walking up the stairs from the subway. i got people infront of me and people going down. out of the blue, i hear this lady behind me, saying "move it. you're too slow." not one to give way to utterly ridiculous behaviour, i was quick to retort, "jeez, what an a$$hole." and made sure it was extra crisp and loud obviously coz i wasnt going to let her ipod get in the way of the truth.

and so we finally get out of the station, only to realize that she's a bloody slow-paced walker anyway. what a bleep. showing my true passive-aggressive filipino blood i walk past her, slow down a bit, and tell her, "you know what, you got people infront and people going down, [so what would you expect?]" and this is the highlight of the whole story. her defense, "i could just call the cops on you." you have got to be kiddin me. that's the funniest joke of a person ive ever met. so ok, perhaps not as funny as another person i know. but i dont wanna put that person on the spot, lest i really do get the cops on me.

so ive seen this brilliant lady once after that incident. why wouldnt i. she does work in my building after all and her high heels and green leprechaun jacket's kinda hard to miss—and apparently we do share the same penchant for coming to work on the 10AM side. so if i want a more zenful daily commute, i guess i do have to get over it, huh?

fair enough, change topic, then. time to celebrate the actual triumph of getting over. getting over an annoying cold sore, a cold that wouldnt seem to go away, and a less than optimal immune system. a few real hectic days at work. cold winds and a few snowstorms that just wouldnt go away. daylight savings time that's 3 weeks early. and yup, even leprechauns in heels.

apparently the best way to getting over a real tiring long day at work, is to exert yourself even more. common reaction is to head straight home. utter no-no. you'll just end up pigging yourself out with chips and cookies and feeling all the more lethargic. spinning and exercise works for me. tried it this one day when i was feeling a bit extra exhausted, and it actually recharged the batteries in an almost strange sort of way coz i was exhausted but somehow all the sweating took all the toxic thoughts and energies away. plus, the cookies after gave a nice well-derved suggarrrushh feeling instead of a food coma guilt-crap feeling.

speaking of cookies, apparently, getting over the bad leprechauns and elements in this world arent really that difficult coz there are some really kind-hearted people out there. take for example this new dunkin donuts sales lady who has this good bad habit of sneaking in an extra muffin and cookie or two in my bag whenever id be ordering just one. granted, she might be fishing for extra tips but only once did i give her the extra tip when aside from giving me my bag, she gave another whole bag stuffed with muffins and cookies. and that was infront of the manager (ok, he was at the back of the kitchen when that happened and perhaps it explains her short-lived dunkin donuts career coz i no longer see her during her usual shift. oh well, there goes the one that sustained my sugar craving.)

and apparently, the best way of getting over the bad leprechauns is by doing good. (so this is the part where i start to sound like im tooting my own horn which is a bit unavoidable coz this is after all, my blog) past 2 saturdays we're spent doing some fun-filled volunteer work. first was with free arts day, where i got to buddy up with a kid named paul doing transportation-themed arts and crafts projects. hadnt done a free arts day for the longest time, so it was a much welcomed experience. too bad, paul was spent and couldnt keep his eyes open after downing those 10 slices of pizza. oh the joys and evils of free food.

second saturday, last saturday that is, was spent at the art directors club for the first session of this season's career workshops. attendance was a bit slimmer than usual coz the snowstorm left some snowed in. nevertheless, it was a great workshop run by diana laguardia, creative director who specializes in magazine design. it was great being able to mentor some of the high school students again and also get a feel of where they at. coz i gonna be runnin an advertising workshop in 2 weeks yo and i aint got no clue yet as to what whack presentation im doin. wait a minute, do they even use the word whack?

to overcome my disdain for reading books with a lot of words, id finally finished reading absurdistan—my 4th book with a lot of words for this year. quite the accomplishment coz there was no single picture in that book. well, it wouldve been too graphic anyway, what with all that talk about khuis and pizda. real funny read. flip-side with reading all these fictional books though is that somehow my life has taken quite a fictional comic adventure character.

did i tell you the story about this leprechaun who i met once upon a lovely early morning?
